you’ve probably noticed that all Facebook fan pages have the same layout. this is a good thing and a bad one if you are trying to promote your business because part of the game is to find a way to differentiate yourself from everyone else out there. on the other hand, there is something to be said for standardization because it fosters a sense of security for the customer – they know what to look for and what to expect on the Facebook pages so it becomes easier, as a consumer, to navigate and make their way around. that way, there is less uncertainty and confusion for the visitors.
having said that, it would sure be nice to find a way to make your fanpage pop, build curiosity, and peak interest. enter fbml. fbml (facebook markup language) allows you to customize your page to make it your own – for example, check out this Victoria’s Secret fan page.
notice how there is no standard sidebar on the left and how this page contains whatever Victoria’s Secret wants – like a promotion or ad campaign…this page could even be set as the fan page landing page. if you have an autoresponder, you could even put an opt-in box if you like (we’ll keep that for a future article).
